Green Tara is thought to represent the fulfillment of all worldly and spiritual ambitions for all beings. She personifies good fortune as one that grants beings’ wants, yet unlike the worldly wealth-bestowing deities, the wishes she provides include escape from ignorance.

She was a princess named Jnana Chandra. She made a commitment in her childhood to achieve total enlightenment in a female form, and she went into intense meditation, focusing her thoughts on the interconnected nature of existence and the responsibility of helping other beings. She then took an oath to devote the rest of her life to the well-being of all living things.

Her green color signifies the fact that she grants wishes. Her right-hand gesture implies that she will help people who desire to Buddhahood toward their objective, whereas her left-hand gesture indicates that she is free of all ignorance and so gifted with the authority and power to carry out her aim to meet the needs of beings. Her white necklace signifies the joy that comes from overcoming the obscurantists of ignorance, while the utpala flower she holds in her left hand indicates the labor required to overcome these impediments. Her outstretched right leg symbolizes her willingness to assist any hurting being.
