Description

This beautiful thangka is a hand painted by the artist of Bhaktapur Nepal. This Thangka is painted on handmade cotton canvas, Painted using natural color in a traditional Tibetan thangka color.

Guhyasamaja’ means ‘Assembly of the Secret Ones’ (Tib. Sangwa-dupa) or ‘Secret Union’.

The Guhyasamaja Tantra is also referred to as the King of Tantras. In Tibet, Guhyasamaja is particularly favored by the Gelug tradition, most likely for the antiquity of his texts. It was one of the first Sanskrit scriptures to be translated into Tibetan in the 8th Century. It serves the Buddhist practitioner in understanding and practicing Tantric Buddhism.

Iconography

Guhyasamaja is one of the most interesting, complicated and important figures in Vajrayana Buddhism. Guhyasamaja is a manifestation of Buddha Akshobhya. It combines various important Tathagata Buddhas into one sculpture. It is predominantly is call Akshobhayavajara which is the form of Akshobhaya buddha. Guhyasamāja is blue-black in color, a form of Akshobhya, one of the five transcendent lords. Akshobhyavajra holds a vajra and bell (ghanta) in his first two hands, and other hands hold the symbols of the four other transcendent lords, wheel of Vairocana and lotus of Amitabha in his rights, and a gem of Ratnasambhava and sword of Amoghasiddhi in his lefts.
