Description

Guanyin is portrayed in this thangka painting as a beautiful young woman posing in her traditional reclined position, donned in a flowing robe and wearing royal jewels. The crown is decorated with the image of Amitabha Buddha. Near her right hand is depicted a jar full of pure water and the left-hand holds a small willow branch.

Guanyin is an East Asian bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by Mahayana Buddhists. She is commonly known as the “Goddess of Mercy” in English. The Chinese name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, meaning “The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World”.
