Medical Thangka Bloodletting, Surgical, and Moxibustion Points, Back View shows treatments are viewed as being relatively extreme and they are generally used only when milder therapies don’t work. The size of this thangka is 74*90 cm.

The moxibustion points are shown in red, bloodletting points in blue and surgical points in yellow. In moxibustion, cones or rolls of burning leaves are placed on the points. To withdraw blood, a point is opened with a sharp instrument such as a lancet.

Surgery usually consists of lancing abscesses or infections and removing pus or cauterizing wounds. Blood can be taken from a number of points on the nose and mouth, including on the tongue and in the middle of the lower lip.
