A stupa is a mound-like structure used by Buddhists as a site of devotion that houses Buddhist relics, usually the bones of Buddha. The stupa is the oldest Buddhist holy structure and it began as a simple mound of mud or clay to conceal alleged Buddha relics. Following the Buddha’s enlightenment, his remains were incinerated and the ashes were split and buried under eight stupas with two more stupas encasing the urn and embers.

Little is known about these early stupas, especially since the original 10 structures have not been identified. Later stupas like those found in Sarnath and Sanchi, appear to be embellishments of previous mounds. The Buddha crowned and sitting in meditation posture on a lion throne is depicted in the stupa’s shape.

His crown is the spire’s top and his head is the square at the spire’s base. His body is the vase form. his legs are the lower terrace’s four stairs. His throne is the base.
