Medicine Buddha, Lord of Healing In Mahayana tradition, there are infinite Buddhas, bodhisattvas, & deities representing aspects of absolute Buddha-nature, such as compassion, wisdom, power & emptiness. Medicine Buddha embodies the healing aspect.

He is worshipped as the dispenser of spiritual medicine that could cure spiritual, psychological & physical disease. Among the 12 vows, Medicine Buddha is believed to have taken is that of curing just by the invocation of his name or the thought of Him.

This Buddha is not worshipped simply for healing powers alone; he is the form of the Buddha-nature that we aspire to realize in ourselves. Through the practice of meditation on the Medicine Buddha, one can generate enormous healing power for self & others. Tibetan physicians vow to regard medicine as an offering to the Medicine Buddha & all other medicine deities & considers his medical instruments as holy objects. Pharmaceuticals, a mixture of vegetable, animal & mineral compounds, are prepared with meticulous attention to religious ritual.

The Tibetan physician gathers dozens of different ingredients that go into the making of the single pill. He performs a meditative ritual before & after the ingredients in the pills have been assembled, he imagines himself & the medicine to be Hayagriva, a Buddhist deity. He & the deity are considered to be consolidated as one inseparable entity. Medicines are further blessed into a magnificent state through being implanted with the mantra, a prayerful vocalization.

Pills are blessed this way & Tibetans believe that even the dying can benefit from them. Medicine has the metaphorical ability to remove poisons on the physical as well as spiritual plane. Healing, however, can take place only if behind the offering is the desire to purify a specific poison. Being free from physical suffering & suffering on all levels. The goal is not only temporary relief but healing in the ultimate sense.
