Iconography of Green Tara

Green Tara is depicted with a kind expression, seated on a white moon disk that represents a special restorative nectar linked to the naval chakra. In Buddhism, the moon symbolizes wisdom, which, when combined with compassion, leads to the enlightenment of Sakyamuni Buddha. Her right hand is elegantly lowered in the Varada mudra, a gesture of granting blessings.

Green Tara holds a blue lotus, also known as the ‘night lotus,’ in both hands. The term Utpala means ‘to burst open.’ In her left hand, she carries a stem with a fully bloomed flower and an unopened bud. The bent lower part of the stem signifies the root.

The open flower represents the present moment and the current Buddha, while the bud signifies the future and the Buddhas yet to come. This future also alludes to a safe journey’s conclusion and overall well-being. Her right hand, symbolizing wisdom, is positioned in a gesture of offering refuge.

The third finger touches the thumb to form a circle, symbolizing the union of wisdom and compassion, while the three extended fingers represent the Three Jewels of Buddhism: The Buddha State, The Body of Teachings, and The Principles of the Universe.

In her right hand, she holds the stem of a blue lotus, indicating her readiness to help. The closed blossom in this hand symbolizes the past and the Buddhas who have come before. Green Tara is portrayed in Khadiravani, a paradise where she resides.

Khadiravani is depicted as a magnificent mountain kingdom filled with trees, flowers, and animals, with rainbow tails radiating from her outer aura. The crescent moon and sun represent the harmonious union of male and female, a common theme in Tantric art.
