Iconography of Green tara

Green Tara is depicted in the middle of the thangka, with a pleasant expression on her face. She is seated on a white moon disk, which is linked to a special healing nectar related to the navel chakra. In Buddhism, the moon stands for wisdom, and when combined with compassion, it leads to Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment. Her right hand is delicately lowered in Varda mudra, which is a gesture of granting boons.

Green Tara is often depicted holding a special lotus known as the ‘Utpala’ or ‘night lotus’, which is blue in color. This flower is shown with its petals open in her left hand and an unopened bud in her right hand. The stem of the flower is bent downwards, symbolizing its root.

The open flower symbolizes the current moment and the current Buddha; the bud symbolizes the future and Buddhas yet to come. This also implies a safe destination and a prosperous future. Her right hand is held in a gesture of offering refuge.

The third finger touches the thumb to create a circle representing the union of wisdom and compassion, and the three extended fingers symbolize the Three Jewels of Buddhism which are The Buddha State, The Body of teachings, The Principles of the Universe.

The thumb and third finger come together to form a circle, symbolizing the unity of wisdom and compassion. The three fingers outstretched represent the Three Jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha State, the Body of teachings, and the Principles of the Universe.

Khadiravani is depicted as a majestic mountain kingdom, surrounded by lush greenery and animals with multicolored tails. The crescent moon and sun represent the Tantric concept of male and female unity.

Mantra of Green Tara

The mantra of Green Tara is om tare tuttare ture soha.
