Iconography of Padmasambhava

The khatvanga is a staff that symbolizes the three bodies of a Buddha: the dharmakaya, sambhogakaya, and nirmanakaya. It has three heads and is decorated with a trishula and a sash made of the Himalayan Rainbow or Five Pure Lights of the Mahabhuta. This sacred item is strongly connected to Padmasambhava and plays a significant role in his visual representation.

He has a piercing, focused gaze with both eyes fully open. He is wearing several layers of clothing, beginning with a white vajra undergarment, followed by a red robe, a dark blue mantrayana tunic, a red monastic shawl decorated with a golden flower pattern, and lastly a maroon silk brocade cloak. He has a single face and two hands.

He holds a vajra with five prongs tightly in his right hand, keeping it near his heart. In his left hand, he holds a cup shaped like a skull, showing a calm gesture. Inside the cup, there is a vase containing the eternal wisdom of knowledge.

In his left arm, he carries a khatvanga with three points, representing his partner Mandarava. On his head, he dons a hat adorned with five petals. His expression is both fierce and joyful, radiating a majestic aura through his prominent characteristics and intricate details. He sits in a dignified posture, with his feet crossed.

Padmasambhava Mantra
