About Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra

The Buddhāvataṃsaka-nāma-mahāvaipulya-sūtra, commonly known as the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, is a prominent Mahāyāna sutra in East Asian Buddhism. Its title translates to "A Garland of Buddhas," reflecting its depiction of a cosmos filled with infinite realms and countless Buddhas. Modern scholars believe it is a compilation of smaller sutras that were later assembled into its current form. Revered for its grandeur and comprehensive scope, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra has deeply influenced East Asian Buddhism, particularly inspiring the Huayan school in China, known for its philosophy of interpenetration. This sutra also holds significant sway in Chan Buddhism and is revered for its profound spiritual and philosophical teachings.
