About Helmut Tauscher

Helmut Tauscher is an academic who completed his studies in History, Art History, and Anglistics at the University of Innsbruck from 1970 to 1974. He then pursued further studies in Tibetan and Buddhist Studies, Indology, and Art History at the University of Vienna from 1974 to 1981. 

In 1983 to 1984, he studied Madhyamaka philosophy at Drepung Loseling Monastery in Mundgod, South India. He obtained his PhD in 1981 and Habilitation in 1996, both in the field of Tibetan and Buddhist studies, from the University of Vienna. 

He worked at the university until his retirement in 2015, focusing his research on Buddhist philosophy, specifically Tibetan Madhyamaka, and Kanjur research. 

He also served as a guest lecturer at various universities from 2001 to 2018 and held the Numata chair for Buddhist Studies at Leiden University in the summer semester of 2017.
