About Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha

The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) is the sole Buddhist organization officially recognized by the Vietnamese government and is part of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front. Established on November 7, 1981, at Quán Sứ Pagoda, the VBS aims to unify Buddhist practices among Vietnamese monks, nuns, and laypeople. The Most Venerable Thích Trí Quảng, appointed in 2021, serves as the acting Supreme Patriarch following the death of Thích Phổ Tuệ. In 2017, the inclusion of Marxism-Leninism in the Vietnam Buddhist Academy’s entrance exam stirred controversy.
