About Joseph Houseal

Joseph Houseal directs Core of Culture Dance Preservation, safeguarding Intangible World Heritage, focusing on ancient dance and endangered movement traditions. 

With a Master's in the Philosophy of Dance from the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance, Houseal trained extensively in Japanese Noh under Kita Master Matsui Akira. Former Artistic Director of Parnassus Dancetheatre in Kyoto, he's collaborated with artists like Chaka Khan. 

Emmy-nominated for PBS's "Ancient Elegance" on Kabuki dance, he's also produced segments on dance reconstruction. 

Under Houseal's leadership, Core of Culture has led preservation projects across Asia, notably Bhutan, culminating in exhibitions like "The Dragon’s Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan." A respected writer, Houseal contributes to Ballet Review, New York, and his work reflects a deep commitment to preserving diverse cultural traditions.
