Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, is the leader of the Catholic Church, bishop of Rome, and ruler of the Vatican City State.
He is the first pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first pope from outside Europe since Gregory III, who was Syrian and lived in the 8th century.
