About Tempel Smith

Tempel Smith is a meditation teacher known for his blend of Buddhist practice and social activism. He began his meditation journey in 1989 at the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) and later spent time as a monk in Myanmar. Since 2001, Tempel has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology to diverse communities, including prisoners and activists. He founded the B.A.S.E. House in San Francisco and initiated iBme, a mindfulness education program for youth. Tempel has also coordinated programs for the Buddhist Peace Fellowship and led pilgrimages in Southeast Asia. Currently, he leads the Dedicated Practitioner Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, integrating Theravada Buddhism with Western sciences and trauma healing methods.
