About Tiantai

Tiantai, an East Asian Buddhist school originating in 6th-century China, emphasizes the "One Vehicle" doctrine from the Lotus Sūtra and Mādhyamaka philosophy. Developed by Zhiyi, it's recognized as the earliest comprehensive adaptation of Indian Buddhist tradition in China. With Tiantai Mountain as its origin, the school gained prominence during the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties, flourishing in temples across China. Its influence extended to Japan through the Tendai school and to Korea with the Cheontae school, profoundly impacting East Asian Buddhism's evolution, including Zen and Pure Land traditions.
