About The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy

The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy was established in 1981 and run by a school of eminent thanka artists with the vast expertise in the legacy of  traditional Tibetan arts of Thankas.

The school was founded with the sole objectives of preserving this rare traditional and religious heritage from the past sacred generations of Tibetan Buddhist communities as well as of promoting the arts to future generations nationally and internationally.

Various styles and masterful designs

The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy has come over a long journey, with a historical feat in the production of innumerable Thankas in various styles and masterful designs. These art works have been made available to the interested public, curators and dealers through local and international markets in the form of displays, exhibitions, expos and trade fairs.

After successfully grooming over three decades since its inception, The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy has been able to train over thousands of enthusiastic and serene artists from home and abroad. Moreover, many of the students from remote rural regions have found our training as a path to their decent walk of life after the training and a great means to rise above the poverty that surrounds them.

Similarly, a remarkable number of them accomplished to the level of Master, who undoubtedly possess a vast range of artistic skills and spiritual status as per the belief of our tradition.

Working for the social welfare and development

In addition, our Thanka School has been working for the social welfare and development in Nepal. The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy is allocating certain funds for such projects from our sales amount of Thankas sold in the market.

The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy primary objective is to provide free handicraft-related skills training to the poor and differently-able Nepalese women so that they may become self-supportive and joyful of their living.

This group coming from various social, economic and ethnic backgrounds has found the training very supportive in their life. The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy has benefited  a good number of such trainees who had been widowed, divorced, handicapped, sexually abused or/and racially discriminated in the society and who later found their training a big achievement to live their life gracefully and independently.

Formal and informal partnerships

The Old Tibetan Thanka Painting Academy has maintained formal and informal partnerships in multiple levels: with local NGOs, government agencies, communities, civil society groups, federations, networks and the private sector in different time frames of its establishment.
