Buddhist art preservation retreat for women at Rubin Museum
From July 19 to 22, the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City will host a special event titled “Preservation Retreat for Women Treasure Caretakers”.
Organized in collaboration with Treasure Caretaker, this unique retreat is designed for women who are responsible for preserving Buddhist sacred art in various settings, including Dharma centers, personal and university collections, and community centers.
This retreat offers practical, low-cost solutions for preserving Buddhist thangkas, murals, and other sacred artworks, making it accessible to women with or without formal preservation training.
The sessions are structured around a Risk Assessment approach and include presentations, hands-on learning, and exclusive site visits to museums, Buddhist temples, and normally inaccessible museum storage areas.
The event is generously funded by The Frederick P. Lenz Foundation for American Buddhism and the Pema Chodron Foundation.
Participation is free, though attendees are encouraged to make a voluntary donation to Treasure Caretaker to support conservation work in remote Buddhist monasteries.
This retreat provides a valuable opportunity for women to gain essential skills in art preservation, ensuring that these sacred treasures are protected for future generations.
