Feeding Our Children and Ancestors in Hawaii

The Honoka‘a Hongwanji , part of the Jodo Shinshu school of , marked a significant milestone by distributing its 75,000th meal.

The ’s Committee has been orchestrating weekly free meals for the community over the past five years, relying entirely on volunteer efforts in the small town of Honoka‘a on Hawai‘i Island.

Known as “Feeding Our Keiki and Kupuna” (Feeding Our Children and Ancestors), the program has become a vital source of nourishment and community support.

Pedro Sanches, a resident of Honoka‘a, was the fortunate recipient of the 75,000th meal, receiving a warm reception from volunteers and Mayor Mitch Rothas.

Sanches expressed gratitude for the delicious food and praised the tireless dedication of the volunteers, emphasizing the program’s invaluable contribution to community well-being and cohesion.

The event underscores the temple’s unwavering commitment to serving and nourishing its community members in of need.
