On Day 4 of the teaching on Vasubandhu’s Thirty Verses, His Holiness began with a recitation of Four Sessions Guru Yoga.
After the customary opening prayers and greetings, he discussed the works of Maitreya from the previous day.
These works are identified differently in the Chinese and Tibetan canons, and His Holiness spent time discussing the difficulties of assigning authorship and precise dates in early Buddhist history due to the lack of records of important events.
He also addressed the question of whether Maitreya was a human or a deity, given that the texts attributed to him exist in the human world.
