MoNA, a relatively recent addition to the art scene, held its official opening in 2021, but had already hosted two virtual exhibitions in 2020 – “Inception” and “Tangential Stress” – with the latter showcasing the work of 19 artists exploring the effects of the COVID pandemic.
Ursula Manandhar, an art specialist, was appointed to the museum as a writer in late 2020 when the pandemic was at its peak. Just one year later, she was promoted to head of research, despite being only 23 years old.
Under the guidance of Rajan Sakya, the director and founder of MoNA, the permanent collection includes works from some of Nepal’s most renowned artists, such as Lok Chitrakar, Purna Hyoju, Puran Shakya, Kiran Manandhar, and Sarada Man Shrestha.
