About Central University of Tibetan Studies

The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) was established in 1967 in Sarnath, Varanasi, India. It was initially known as the Central University for Tibetan Studies (CUTS) and was founded as an autonomous organization under the Union Ministry of Culture. The institute was created by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in consultation with the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. Its purpose is to provide education to Tibetan youths in exile and students from the Himalayan border region. Additionally, the institute aims to translate Indo-Buddhist Sanskrit texts, which are currently only available in Tibetan, into Sanskrit, Hindi, and other modern Indian languages.
