About Paul Swanson

Paul L. Swanson, Ph.D., earned his doctorate in Buddhist Studies from the University of Wisconsin in 1985. He is a Permanent Research Fellow at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture and a Professor at Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan. Editor of the Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, he has published extensively on Tiantai/Tendai Buddhism and East Asian religion. Notable works include "Shugendô and the Yoshino-Kumano Pilgrimage" and "Chih-i's Interpretation of jneyâvarana."
