About Tsering Phuntsok

Tsering Phuntsok, born in 1948 in the eastern Tibetan region of Kham Gonjo, is a Tibetan monk and politician who served as Minister of Religion and Culture from 2006 to 2011. He began his monastic training at Bagon Monastery and later fled into exile following the Chinese occupation of Tibet. After joining Namdrol Ling Monastery in Bylakuppe in 1963, he pursued education at a Tibetan school and later at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) in Varanasi. He was actively involved in various community services and played a founding role in Bod Rawang Denpai Laigul. Phuntsok also served as a member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile for multiple terms and chaired various committees. In 2006, he was appointed as a ministerial candidate, later confirmed by the Parliament. Phuntsok's life and contributions are featured in the 2013 documentary film "Dans un claquement de mains" by Véronique Nicolle and Laurène Lepeytre.
