Description

The Kalachakra deity and his entourage of deities surround him in the Kalachakra Mandala, which represents the components of a single individual person in purified form a fully enlightened human. The Sanskrit words “kala” and “chakra” signify time and cycle, respectively. The name alludes to the Buddhist and Hindu cosmologies’ cyclical aspect of time.

Kalachakra is a four-faced, black-skinned god with twenty-four arms and twelve faces. He is the personification of time, which is reflected in his name. This Kalachakra Mandala depicts an authentic castle that reflects five aspects:

  • Enlightened body
  • Enlightened speech
  • Enlightened mind
  • Enlightened wisdom
  • Enlightened bliss

The palace is surrounded by four elemental rings as well as two outer rings and when all of these elements are put together, it forms a microcosm of universe. Inside out, they symbolize:

  • Water
  • Fire
  • Wind
  • Earth
  • Wisdom and Space
