The Dalai Lama leads six-armed Mahakala ceremony in Dharamsala
On May 18, 2024, at Thekchen Chöling in Dharamsala, India, the Dalai Lama conferred the permission of Six-armed Mahakala to an assembly of 8,500 people.
During the ceremony, he recounted his deep connection with Mahakala, reminiscing about how his mother regarded Mahakala as a protector.
The Dalai Lama shared a poignant memory of seeking Mahakala’s blessing before his exile from Tibet, which he interpreted as a sign of eventual resolution for Tibet.
The permission included a combined practice of four deities associated with Six-armed Mahakala.
The Dalai Lama emphasized the unique support he has received from Mahakala throughout his life, even during his time in China and subsequent exile.
Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche, who had requested the permission, presented a mandala and representations of enlightenment to the Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama discussed the significance of bodhichitta and wisdom in Mahakala’s practices and recounted historical connections, such as those with Mahasiddha Shavaripa, who integrated the practice of four deities.
The session included taking Bodhisattva vows, recitation of mantras, and visualization instructions.
The event concluded with a procession of offerings, prayers for the Dalai Lama’s long life, and a transmission of a praise to Six-armed Mahakala composed by Mahasiddha Shavaripa.
