About Buddhist Peace Fellowship

The Buddhist Peace Fellowship (BPF) is a non-profit, international network of engaged Buddhists who are committed to non-violent social activism and environmentalism. Headquartered in Oakland, California, the organization was founded in 1978 by Robert Baker Aitken, Anne Hopkins Aitken, Nelson Foster, Ryo Imamura, and others. It is an affiliate of the international Fellowship of Reconciliation, which works towards global disarmament and peace. BPF helps individuals suffering under oppressive governments in countries such as Burma, Bangladesh, Tibet, and Vietnam. Notable members include Gary Snyder, Alfred Bloom, Joanna Macy, and Jack Kornfield. The BPF has a tendency to take a left-wing stance on social issues, and while it is nonsectarian, most of its members practice Zen Buddhism.
