The Geshema examinations for 2023 began on July 21st in Dharamsala, India with 132 nuns from seven different educational institutes in India and Nepal participating.
This year marks a new record of 132 participants, 38 more than last year’s 94.
The Geshema degree is the highest level of training in the Gelugpa tradition, equivalent to a PhD in Tibetan Buddhism, and is specifically for women, ending in “ma” instead of “pa” like the Geshe degree for monks.
