Lokapāla means “guardian of the world” in Sanskrit and Pāli.
In Hinduism, it refers to the Guardians of the Directions associated with the eight, nine and ten cardinal directions.
In Buddhism, it refers to the Four Heavenly Kings, and to other protector spirits.
