This Thangka, painted with 24 Carat gold, is a beautiful depiction of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. According to traditional dating, Shakyamuni Buddha also known as Gautama Buddha lived from 566 to 485 BCE in central north India. He was a sage from the ancient Shakya kingdom on whose teachings Buddhism was founded.
Buddha means “awakened one” or “the enlightened one”. Gautama taught a Middle Way compared to the severe asceticism found in the renunciation movement. Shakyamuni Buddha is the primary figure in Buddhism, and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers.
