Since its inception, Vajrayana Buddhism has been a core element of Bhutanese politics and culture, and continues to shape the nation’s identity to this day.
Leytsog Lopen Sangay Dorji is a prominent teacher and the most senior lopon of Bhutan’s central ecclesiastical body, the Zhung Dratshang, since 1621.
As a monk since the age of 11, he oversees all religious activities, such as administration and development, and is the chairman of the Dratshang Koedtshog, the Zhung Dratshang’s executive committee.
