Historiography and Hagiography in Buddhism and Beyond
The University of Cambridge in Cambridge, United Kingdom, will host an international conference focusing on “Historiography and Hagiography in Buddhism and Beyond.”
Scholars from diverse fields will convene to explore recordkeeping practices, historiography, and hagiography within the Buddhist tradition and related cultural contexts.
With the proliferation of textual and visual primary sources and advancements in digitization projects, there is an increased interest in studying premodern and contemporary practices of writing and narration.
The conference seeks to foster interdisciplinary discussions on textual and visual recording, storytelling, and memory in Chinese Buddhism and beyond.
Scholars are invited to submit proposals addressing various topics such as Buddhist historiography, narration of extraordinary individuals, book culture in the Buddhist tradition, and the role of visual arts in supporting Buddhist historiography and hagiography.
The conference is generously sponsored by the Tzu Chi Foundation and hosted by the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
