JTS Korea Support Buddhist Nunneries in Bhutan
A Buddhist advocate worked with volunteers from the Buddhist relief organization, Join Together Society (JTS) Korea, on a joint project to assist female monks in Bhutan.
This initiative, in partnership with the Bhutan Nuns Foundation (BNF), aimed to provide winter supplies to bhikshuni training institutions, aiding women practicing Buddhism in coping with the harsh Himalayan winter.
The Bhutan Nuns Foundation, under the patronage of the Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdoen Wangchuck, is dedicated to the education and empowerment of Buddhist nuns in Bhutan.
Venerable Pomnyun Sunim’s humanitarian relief organization JTS embodies the compassion of engaged Buddhism and operates on the principle that helping others enriches one’s life.
JTS, staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, has a mission to bring hope and self-reliance to underprivileged communities and has earned Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Through their joint efforts, JTS supported 1,585 young nuns across 36 nunneries, distributing 590 winter jackets, 500 pairs of socks, 500 blankets, and 1,239 pairs of shoes.
They also provided sports equipment to enhance the physical well-being of the young monastics.
This assistance brought joy and gratitude, as expressed by Ani Pema from Neylung Nunnery, who thanked JTS for the winter blankets that will help protect against the cold.
Bhutan, the world’s last Vajrayana Buddhist country, has a rich spiritual tradition embedded in its culture, introduced by Guru Rinpoche in the eighth century.
