Roshi Joan Halifax led a Jukai ceremony at Upaya’s zendo
Roshi Joan Halifax led a Jukai ceremony at Upaya’s zendo, conferring Buddhist precepts upon a group of 22 individuals.
Fourteen recipients, including Upaya Residents and local Sangha members, received the precepts in person, while eight others participated online from various locations worldwide.
Jukai, an ancient Buddhist tradition, symbolizes a commitment to living in accordance with the precepts of non-harming and acknowledges recipients as part of the lineage of Buddhist practitioners tracing back to Shakyamuni Buddha.
During the ceremony, Roshi Joan bestowed a Dharma name upon each participant, reflecting their unique qualities. Recipients also received rakusus, symbolic Buddhist robes hand-sewn by themselves over the preceding months.
Preparation for Jukai involves deep study of the precepts and personal reflection on their application in daily life.
Recipients create lineage charts, honoring their Buddhist ancestors and personal influences on their spiritual journey.
