The BDRC expands access to Buddhist resources through local partnerships
The Buddhist Digital Resource Center (BDRC) highlighted its ongoing efforts to expand access to Buddhist literature through collaboration with local library partners.
Head Librarian Karma Gongde has played a key role in these projects, especially at the Geden Choeling Nunnery.
BDRC’s approach to digital preservation goes beyond scanning texts; it includes enhancing library management and lending systems to ensure sustainable preservation and accessibility.
Currently, BDRC is developing a Tibetan Library Management System (TLMS) app.
This app aids libraries in organizing collections and managing lending systems digitally.
Karma Gongde is actively training Tibetan monastics and scholars in using the TLMS app, with field tests in Himachal Pradesh aiding app improvement by the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
In May, Karma conducted training sessions at Ngagyur Shugseb Nunnery in Dharamsala.
Librarians from various institutions, including the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA), learned essential skills like cataloging workflows, creating QR codes, and organizing digital files.
The training extended to Nyagyur Zabsang Choekhor Ling Monastery in Chauntra, focusing on digitization and effective use of the TLMS app.
The team then moved to Geden Choeling Nunnery, where Karma and Project Coordinator Rinchen Kyi collaborated with librarians to prepare for digitization, organize library books, and implement the TLMS app.
Training videos and checklists were provided to ensure successful implementation.
Feedback from librarians has been invaluable in refining the TLMS app, ensuring it meets the needs of Tibetan libraries.
These efforts ensure the preservation and accessibility of Buddhist texts for future generations.
