The creation, care and transmission of textiles in Zen practice
This inter-sangha ceremony, open to all, provides a way for the gift of fabric to be transformed into a spiritual experience that transcends form and emptiness. It is a way to honor the Kathina offering tradition of the Buddha in a Zen way.
All local sewing instructors are welcomed to join us for a meal and discussion about the custom of making Buddha’s robes.
On this exciting evening, we will explore the art of donning religious robes for members of the international Soto Zen sangha.
We will examine the correct way to wear the garments and practice proper deportment while doing so, which requires both physical awareness and knowledge of tradition. Feedback will be provided to help refine these skills.
Participants will have the chance to learn how to don robes with ease and comfort. We may also uncover any necessary modifications and adjustments. Are the hemlines too long or too short? Is the tie too worn or too difficult to use? Are there gaping necklines? Are the Okesa corners constantly flapping around your ears?
Victoria will be bringing a variety of okesa to the event, and demonstrating the different ways they are worn in various temples. If you have an okesa that is unique or you have questions about it, please bring it along! A small reward will be given to the attendee who can best challenge Victoria’s knowledge.
