About Tsherin Sherpa

Tsherin Sherpa was born in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1968 and currently splits his time between California, USA and Nepal. He began studying traditional Tibetan thangka painting with his father at the age of 12. After immigrating to California in 1998, Sherpa taught thangka painting at various Buddhist Centers while also developing his own unique style. In his work, he reimagines traditional tantric motifs, symbols, colors, and gestures in contemporary compositions. He also incorporates imagery from classical Tibetan Buddhist iconography, abstracting and reconstructing it to explore his personal experiences as a diasporic individual and the clash between sacred and secular cultures. By incorporating elements of mass culture, Sherpa creates a dialogue where Buddhist icons and global issues can transform and reflect each other.
