Samantabhadra with Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka is a beautiful hand-painted thangka on cotton canvas. Samantabhadra is one of the oldest & among the most complex Buddhism. The represents the realization & flowering of pure consciousness.

Samantabhadra is depicted in the center of the thangka. Shakyamuni Buddha is presented at the top left corner of the Samantabhadra in the thangka. Medicine Buddha is presented at the top right corner of the Samantabhadra in the thangka.

Iconography of Samantabhadra

Samantabhadra is also known as Visvabhadra who is naked called ‘sky clad’, presented with embracing figures the white female figure is called Samantabhadri in a body position called Yib-Yum togetherness known as the body of blissful union called Sambhogakaya. The word Samantabhadra means Universal loving Virtue. A union of the inner and outer world. The principle of duality is visualized in male & female, dark-light, love-hate, day & night. The co-emergence of wisdom with the fitness of action which is similar to compassion leads one to a state of Great Bliss.

The state of Great Bliss is akin to individual Nirvana. The eight embedded jewels represent the Eightfold Path realized by Sakyamuni. There is a small mirror representing introspection, sight, or form together with a jewel offering in the foreground.

The two hand symbols represent the sense offering of sound. The rainbow beams arising from the crimson nimbus around the head of Samanta Bhadra represent mastery of Boddhi Nature & one manifestation of the Sambhogakaya is the Rainbow Body. There is a small mirror representing introspection, sight, or form together with a jewel offering in the foreground.

Iconograpy of Shakyamuni

Shakyamuni Buddha is presented at the top left corner of the Samantabhadra in the thangka. His left hand is in the lap holding a begging bowl while the right arm is extended across the leg with the fingers touching the earth.

His skin is golden in color, the eyes partially closed and the hair piled with a gold ornament adorning the top of the head.

A dot (bindi or “urna”) between the eyebrows and the earlobes is elongated and pierced. The shoulders are covered with an orange and red robe wrapped around the torso and legs and tied at the waist with a green sash.

The mantra of Shakyamuni is Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha.

Iconography of Medicine Buddha

Medicine Buddha is presented at the top right corner of the Samantabhadra in the thangka. Medicine Buddha is the popular term for Bhaisajyaguru and refers to healing blue light transmitted by his representation and conception. Bhaisajyaguru means “Master of Blue Light”.

His healing energy is transmitted through a blue light wavelength called Vaydurya light. Medicine Buddha radiates this healing energy. Think of the light as internal chakra energy.
