New Buddhist Vihara Blooms in Port Townsend
Pārāyana Vihāra has opened in Port Townsend, Washington, as a new residence for female Buddhist monastics.
Named “The Way to the Beyond” in Pali, the vihara aims to provide a welcoming space for individuals to explore the Buddhist path of awakening.
Located at the end of a quiet street that leads to a woodland path, the vihara offers a peaceful yet accessible retreat.
Founders Ayya Anandabodhi and Samaṇeri Junha have set up shrines and meditation spaces, and are now ready to welcome visitors for Sunday meditation sessions.
The vihara also plans to open a public Buddhist library in the fall, showcasing a collection curated over 15 years. This library will serve as a resource for those wishing to study the dhamma through written works.
Pārāyana Vihāra functions as both a monastic residence and a community hub, offering meditation and teaching sessions.
Engagement opportunities include attending dhamma events, offering meals, participating in Saturday alms rounds, and providing donations or volunteer support.
An almsgiving ceremony on September 22 will celebrate the community’s generosity and support the vihara’s activities.
The monastics live by the Buddha’s principle of mutual support between monastics and laypeople, sharing teachings freely and relying on community generosity.
Pārāyana Vihāra, rooted in resilience and dedication, promises to be a sanctuary for spiritual growth in the Buddhist tradition.
