Nuns from Sravasti Abbey Receive Full Bhikshuni Ordination in Taiwan
Five nuns from Sravasti Abbey in the United States recently achieved a significant milestone in their spiritual journey by receiving full Bhikshuni ordination in Taiwan.
The ordination ceremony took place at Fo En Si Temple in Taichung, Taiwan, with Venerable Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron, the founder of Sravasti Abbey, serving as one of the preceptors.
This ceremony marks a pivotal moment for the Abbey’s community, increasing the number of fully ordained nuns to 17.
Due to the unavailability of full monastic ordination for female renunciates in the Tibetan tradition, Sravasti Abbey’s nuns receive ordination in the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya lineage, which is practiced in various Asian countries.
Sravasti Abbey holds the distinction of being the first Tibetan monastery for Western monastics in the US.
It operates on the principle of gender equality, with female and male monastics studying and practicing together.
Thubten Chodron is known for her practical and insightful teachings on applying Buddhist principles in daily life.
She has studied under esteemed masters and is actively involved in various outreach activities, including prison outreach and interfaith dialogue.
