In this talk Venerable Thubten Jigme discusses the importance of community in personal spiritual growth, drawing inspiration from Master Hsing Yun’s book “Building Community”.
Thubten Jigme highlights that communities are composed of individuals united by a shared philosophy, supporting each other to foster mutual growth and inspiration.
This concept is exemplified in the Abbey’s meditation practice, where the collective wisdom and effort of the community provide support and strength to individuals, allowing for collective growth and a greater impact.
Thubten Jigme recounts the transformation of the Abbey’s meditation hall from a chaotic space to a tranquil and supportive environment, attended regularly by about 18 monastics and occasional guests.
The community’s collective energy has created an atmosphere conducive to meditation, with newcomers also respecting the established quietude.
Different individuals lead daily practice sessions, which enhances motivation and fosters a sense of connectedness among community members.
During large retreats, the community seamlessly maintains a supportive space, enabling visitors to focus on teachings and meditation without distractions.
Thubten Jigme expresses gratitude for the Buddha’s vision in establishing monastic communities, which promote growth and deeper practice towards full Awakening.
This reflection underscores the transformative power of a cohesive community in spiritual practices.
