On Monday, His Holiness and His Holiness released a joint statement regarding the of Kunzig , also known as the .

The two expressed their mutual commitment to collaborate on the recognition, education, and of the next Shamarpa.

This title is held by the leader of the , which has the longest continuous line of (reincarnated ) in , dating back to the first Gyalwa Karmapa, (1110–93).

A disagreement in the lineage has led to two individuals being recognized as the Karmapa by different groups of people.

In recent years, Ogyen Trinley Dorje and Trinley Thaye Dorje have made efforts to resolve the rift in the lineage.
