Workshop on Micro-phenomenology with Dr. Renée Ford
On March 23, Professor Renée Ford led a workshop at Rangjung Yeshe Institute (RYI) in Kathmandu focusing on micro-phenomenology, a valuable interview technique employed by anthropologists in religious studies.
The session began with a contemplative exercise to foster awareness among the 25 participants, followed by a presentation and viewing of micro-phenomenology interviews conducted on individuals exploring their sensory and emotional experiences when prompted to spell the word “elephant.”
Participants engaged in practical exercises, conducting interviews in small groups and conversing in their native languages.
This hands-on experience provided valuable insight into the technique’s application.
The workshop was a significant addition to RYI’s research methods, enriching its focus on textual and philosophical research with anthropological approaches.
Micro-phenomenology’s emphasis on meditative awareness aligns with RYI’s ethos, enabling participants to observe and articulate their experiences in intricate detail.
Professor Renée Ford’s current research project, “heart openings,” delves into the experiences of openness and love among Buddhist practitioners, showcasing the practical relevance of micro-phenomenology in religious studies and its potential for deepening understanding of human consciousness.
