Bangladesh celebrates Buddha Purnima with presidential and ministerial greetings
Buddha Purnima, also known as Vaishakhi Purnima or Vesak Day, is the most significant religious festival for Buddhists and was celebrated across Bangladesh on May 22.
The event, observed as a public holiday, honors the birth, enlightenment, and mahaparinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha.
Celebrations included lighting lamps, peace processions, religious discussions, morning chanting, congregational prayers, meditation, and worship at monasteries nationwide.
Ananda Mitra Mahathero, abbot of the Sabujbag monastery in Dhaka, expressed prayers for universal happiness and prosperity, emphasizing peace and national harmony.
Bangladesh’s President and Prime Minister extended warm greetings to the Buddhist community.
The President highlighted the Buddha’s teachings of equality and friendship, noting their relevance in promoting peace and preventing violence in today’s world.
He praised Bangladesh’s tradition of communal harmony, where all religions are celebrated with splendor.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a non-communal spirit, emphasizing that while religion is personal, festivals are for everyone.
She underscored the importance of following the Buddha’s teachings to combat violence and uphold societal values.
She acknowledged the contributions of Buddhists to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development and called for collective efforts to build a peaceful society.
