Iconography of Black Jambhala
Shakyasribhadra popularized the pose by standing naked and wrathful while clutching a skullcup and a mongoose. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is known as the God of Wealth. He treads on the back of a golden rich man in august guise. Bari Lotsawa and Kashmiri teacher Shakyashri Bhadra popularized the wealth deity Jambhala.
Ngorchen Konchog Lhundrub, 1497-1557
“The Lord Jambhala, with a body black in colour, having the appearance of a dwarf, pot-bellied, without pierced ears, brown hair flowing upwards and bared fangs, adorned with the eight great nagas. The right hand holds a blood filled skullcup and the left a mongoose expelling various jewels. The right leg is extended pressing upon the yellow Lord of Wealth, adorned with various gold ornaments, lying supine expelling various jewels from the mouth.”
Ngorchen Konchog Lhundrub, 1497-1557
He is the manifestation of Amoghasiddhi Buddha, who was summoned by Buddha Shakyamuni to turn the wheel of Dharma for the benefit of impoverished sentient beings. He will enable all undertakings to be completed flawlessly, remove all bad luck and impediments, and prevent theft, bad debts, and riches loss.
Jambhala’s body is black in color. Also represented in a standing position over a human body, it represents the subduing of the human ego and the eradication of greed. His right hand holds the Gems Pot, while his left-hand holds a mongoose named Nehulay that spits out diamonds from its mouth. On his body, Black Jambhala also wears a snake necklace.
Iconography according to Sarma Tradition
According to sarma Tradition, Black jambhala is depicted with 1 face 2 arms with back body color. Usually, he is standing holding a skullcup and mongoose in his hands. He is presented in the ithyphallic state in most of the arts.
