Explaining Lama Teacher Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo
Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo was born in 1110. Pagmadrupa Dorje Gyalpo was one of the three principal students of Gampopa. Padmadrupa Dorje Gyalpo was the founder of the Pagdru Kagyu School.

Etymology of Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo
Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo is known as Pag mo gru pa rdo rje rgyal po in Tibet. Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo was the elder brother of Kathog Dampa Deshek who founded Kathog monastery and the Kathog branch of the Nyingma school.

Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo with Vajradhara Thangka
Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo with Vajradhara is from Tibet. The thangka of Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo with Vajradhara is made between 1400 – 1499 AD. Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo with Vajradhara is from Kagyu Lineage. The size of the painting is 27.94×23.50cm. The base f the painting is Ground Mineral Pigment on Cotton. At the top center of the Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo, there is the primordial buddha of the Vajrayana system, Vajradhara. Alternating from left to right side of the Pagmadrupa Dorje Gyalpo there are Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Milarepa, Gampopa, and Drigungpa. The lineage lamas continue descending at the right and left sides.

Donor Figures
Yellow Jambhala, Black Jambhala, Red Hayagriva, Chaturbhuja Mahakala, and Shri Devi Dorje Rabtenma is at the bottom left corner of the thangka. They are known as donor figures.
All of the figures, except for the deities at the bottom, have small name inscriptions beneath each. Based on the names in the lineage, the painting can be tentatively dated to the 15th century.

In 1158 DPagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo built a hermitage at Phagmo Drupa in a juniper forest in Nedong above the Tsangpo river valley. Later, as Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo’s fame spread and disciples gathered. This site developed into the major monastic seat of Dentsa Thel which was the center of the Phagmo Drupa or Phagdru Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, one of the “four great” Dagpo Kagyu schools.

Pagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo with Chenga Drakpa Jungne Thangka

After the death of Phagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo, his main disciple Jigten Sumgon appointed Chenga Drakpa Jungne as abbot Dentsa Thel. In 1253, when Kublai Khan gave the Sakyapas temporal power in Tibet, Dorje Pel the brother of Chenga Drakpa Jungne was appointed as the hereditary Tripon of the surrounding area of Nedong. From that time on the Tripon who as a monk, assumed the seat of the local government of Nêdong and also ruled as abbot at Dentsa Thel.
Brothers of the Tripon married in order to perpetuate the family line, succession going from uncle to nephew. As the Tripons of Nedong were about of the monastery founded by Phagmo Drupa, and hierarchs of the Phagdru Kagyu tradition they became known as Phagdru Tripon. In 1322 Changchub Gyaltsen (1302–1364) became the Phagdru Myriarch of Nedong.
